I suppose all people who live in cities in developed countries are familiar with the crowded roads and the traffic jams of private cars.
If a lot of people gave up their car and spent the same amount of money on public transport we would have a much better public transport system.
Near where we live nearly every roadside space is taken by a parked car and most days a permanent traffic jam occupies the main roads all round.
We must remove the car and replace it by some other public transport system.
We could have light narrow gage rail networks with pick-ups at every house in each suburban and city road. These small 10 seat tram cars would be driverless and travel to a central place where other longer distance transport may be picked up.
The tram-cars would be very frequent, one every 5 minutes in any one place, stopping to pick up or set down by request. The request would be handled by a roadside call button so that the tram to your destination would stop there within 5 minutes of the call. The tram would then remember where to set down at the requestors destination or interchange.
There would be tram-tram interchanges as well as tram-train or tram-metro interchanges. The tram would also stop at shopping centres and longer distance bus stations.
The trams could be rail guided or run on road wheels along painted markings or in concrete tramways with protection from interlopers. Possibly in some places the tramway would be roofed over with a glass shell.
I suggest that they need to have luggage space and high acceleration to a moderate cruising speed.
Each road would have its own tram route with trams negotiating a route that combines convenience with speed of jouney.
Since the trams would be automatic (with radio-controlled supervision) their labour costs would be minimised. Fares would be by subscription or by paying by a card at the request button point.
Gone would be the mad rush to jam every morning and evening, instead would be an orderly line of automatic tram cars taking the commuters to their places of work and back.
It occurs to me that when a request is made the individual tram could be automatically programmed to pick-up people and set down on a route determined by the requestors, so each tram would travel by an individual route depending on the wishes of its requestors. A route would be worked out by the on-board computer that best suited the requests received at the appropriate time.
